LOST IN MUSIC

Mark K

Life can be hectic and stressful for most people but many on the autistic spectrum are also battling anxiety. It feels relentless and impossible to avoid. Things which neurotypical people may not consider a big deal can ruin our day. An unexpected diversion on the way to work, a missed call from an unknown number, running out of toothpaste, witnessing an argument…. At the end of a day we need to unwind, desensitise and recover. We need to find our own coping strategies. For me music is such a great aid for relaxation.

Here is my current downtime dozen; twelve beautiful pieces which are guaranteed to soothe and revive.

1. Clair de Lune – Claude Debussy

One of my all time favourite pieces of music. Close your eyes and let those famous, gentle piano chords massage your busy brain.

2. Nocturne No.2, Op.9 in E flat – Frédéric Chopin

My favourite composer. His music is just.. wow! I would also add to the list : Prelude in E minor and Preludes Op.28.No 2.

3. Liebesträume : Nocturne No.3 – Franz Liszt

I think my favourite piece of classical – at least of what I have heard. This has washed away my woe on many an occasion. A slow musical rain shower.

4. Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor – Sergei Rachmaninoff

Absolutely beautiful. One to listen to all by yourself.

5. Theme from Schindler’s List – John Williams

The master of movie scores and so much more. The film and of course the history are harrowing. This piece of music is so moving and I find it puts my stresses into context.

6. Porz Goret – Yann Tiersen

I discovered Tiersen like most people through the Amelie OST. Comptine d’un autre été is lovely but for me is surpassed by Porz Goret. Look for the guitar version on YouTube.

7. Lift – Radiohead

I have never understood why Radiohead are thought of as a brooding, gloomy band. For me their music is inspiring, original and motivating. I had this track on repeat for two years during my diagnosis.

8. God Only Knows – Beach Boys

The song that Paul McCartney wishes he’d written! Just an incredible combination of chords with a melody to melt away even the longest lingering worries.

9. All you’re Dreaming Of – Liam Gallagher

There’s something special about this song. Liam manages to make the lyrics seem bespoke to the listener. I grew up with Oasis and loved lots of their music. Let There Be Love, Stop Crying Your Heart Out and Who Feels Love are nice ones to chill out to.

10. Song for Guy – Elton John

No lyrics until the very end. Just lovely. “Your Song” is another for the playlist.

11. Just Breathe – Pearl Jam

Eddie’s voice is unique. For me he is the greatest singer ever. He captures and conveys real emotion and I had to have him in this list. His “Into the Wild” album is fantastic too.

12. What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong When you’re finally chilled out the world always seems a better place.
